September is the ninth month on the Georgian calendar with 30 days but was originally the seventh month on the Roman calendar.  This month is one of the hotter ones for the Southern United States.  It is warm in the Northern United States but the nights start to become cooler. 

September and December begin on the same day of the week every year as they are separated by 91 days.  Labor Day is the only legal holiday in September occurring on the first Monday of the month (September 6 in 2010) and is celebrated in both the United States and Canada.  Labor Day was first celebrated in 1882 in New York City.  Originally it was meant to be a holiday to honor the the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations and followed by festivals.  Today it still holds that celebration element but is seen in America as more of a symbolic end of summer, the last day of rest and parties.  Families and children of school age view it as a last chance to travel before school begins.  It also marks the beginning of US football seasons. 

Mexicans and many Mexican-Americans will celebrate the Mexican Independence days on September 15 and 16.  Both Citizenship Day and Constitution Day are observed in the United States On September 17th.  

The September flower is:

·         the morning glory, or aster. Morning glories symbolize valor, faith and love.  The word aster comes from the Greek word for star, which describes the shape of the flower itself.

The September gem is:

·         the sapphire. The meaning is clear thinking.
